Trip Overview

This is a long trek and there are several variations that can be considered, however, the trek is continuously undertaken at altitudes of 4000+m. There are several 5000+m passes to cross and each pass effectively cuts you off from all links to the outside world. The Dolpa region is close to the northern border and as such is regarded as a restricted area commanding expensive permits. However, there is no other area like Dolpa in Nepal and an expedition into the wilder northern regions is spectacular with its hidden monasteries, unique culture, yak caravans and Bon festivals. This trek includes
the Lower Dolpa trek as a jumping off point for the extended Dolpa Circuit. Expeditions into Dolpo can be challenging as the tourism infrastructure is almost non-existent and organized tours are essential. The Upper Dolpo trek continues towards the northern border after a visit to the Shey Gompa and the crystal mountain which provide a retreat and auspicious charm and serenity.

Despite the natural beauties and impressive scenery, the trail travels into the hidden communities of Saldang, Yangtser Gumpa and Ku Goan, about as far from civilization as you are likely to get in Nepal.
