Trip Overview

The Chulu Massif rises to the north of the Marshyangdi River in the Manang region forming part of the Manang Himal, part of the greater Damodar Himal. Climbing Chulu Far East 6038m is not technical and the high camp near the Col will provide a good jumping off point. Initially following the South West ridge on mixed snow and ice the summit can quickly be reached if properly acclimatised. Once off the mountain the trek takes on the challenges of the Tilicho Lake with the associated high pass crossing that eventually lead down to Jomsom. Tilicho Lake is the world’s highest glacial lake at an altitude of 4949m and continuing on to cross the high Eastern Pass 5340m and then the Mesokanto La 5121m provides an alternative and much less trodden route across the watershed from the Marsyangdi valley into the Kali Gandaki Valley. Lake Tilicho is surrounded by the High Annapurna Himalaya with Tilicho Peak 7134m providing the southern retaining dam for the lake with Dhaulagiri framed at the valley head.
